![]() Predictable road to performance.Įven though solving high-scale problems is hard, performance and unit costs can predictably decrease as you increase production volume and build units over time - combined effects that are known as the “ experience curve.” (Moore’s Law, which states that computing power can double every two years, might be the best-known example of an experience curve.) Problems as the SolutionĪ vision dedicated to these high-scale and high-complexity problems provides several advantages. But solving these problems is not for the faint of heart: it requires taking “ big bets,” as our colleague David Yoffie documents in his extensive research about Elon Musk. A long stream of research by our colleagues and others suggests that a commitment to reaching critical scale and overcoming complexity can serve as sustainable sources of competitive advantage. These types of problems have a clear potential for a sustainable competitive advantage - if you can solve the problem. For a rocket to be reusable, it must be able to slow from nearly 3,000 mph to a safe landing speed and nail a bullseye landing. Building reusable rockets, like Musk is focused on at SpaceX, is incredibly hard. Second, overcoming a great deal of complexity - resolving dealing with multiple interdependent moving parts - requires the commitment of time and stamina for failure. Giga Texas, the fifth Tesla Gigafactory, is the largest factory in the world by floor area. ![]() ![]() Consider Tesla’s behemoth “gigafactories.” The idea behind these factories is that mass producing electric vehicles at costs that make them viable for a broad commercial market requires massive scale. Specifically, he seems drawn to problems that involve navigating scale and overcoming complexity.įirst, navigating scale means he selects problems that can only be solved through the commitment of massive fixed-cost investments. While we conventionally think of a vision as being in pursuit of a specific type of solution, Musk seems to take a different approach: he pursues a specific type of problem. In 1980, Bill Gates famously articulated a bold, clear vision for “a computer on every desk and in every home.” Each Musk-affiliated company has its own sense of that boldness and clarity: Tesla’s is to, “ to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy” and SpaceX’s is to, “ make humanity interplanetary.” But to really understand Musk, we need to have a sense for the overall Musk vision that spans his many businesses as a whole. The most effective strategies often have a common trait: they build from a bold and clear vision of the future that gives the business a purpose today. Finally, this framework gives us a lens to think about the attempt to acquire Twitter - which Musk is now trying to walk away from - in the context of Musk’s broader strategy. Investors can also use these ideas to make more thoughtful decisions when providing resources to entrepreneurs in nascent markets, such as Web3 and the metaverse. In understanding the strategy across his many businesses - and the significant risks of that strategy - executives can apply those lessons to launching and growing their own groundbreaking businesses. Musk’s strategy can be characterized by common themes across three areas: what fits into his vision for problems to solve, how he designs an organization as a solution to those problems, and why he can so effectively mobilize resources towards those solutions. Based on our research and teaching on strategy for innovation, technology, and growth, we see (some) method to the madness. We can all learn a lot - both good and bad - from Musk’s other businesses: Tesla, SpaceX, Hyperloop, OpenAI, The Boring Company, and NeuraLink. Why did he want to buy the company in the first place, and what was he planning to do with it? Will he make a lot of money or will he lose all of it? Many questions simply boiled down to: “What is he thinking?!” Or, put another way, is Musk out there just winging this, or does he have a strategy? And if so, what is the Musk strategy? During Elon Musk’s dramatic, sometimes pugnacious, occasionally baffling campaign to acquire Twitter, we heard many of the same questions from both his followers and his critics. ![]() Support the UB mods and custom campaigns out there. Various refinements to the UI (laptop and strategic map) and any other UX catered for UB. Implement all the new items, mercs, side quests, quotes and story telling. JA2:S already has corresponding fixes to most of those however. Review and integrate the bug fixes and small improvements to the game engine which can benefit vanilla. I think we can sort and group the changes in phases, as below: 0. Quotes and NPC actions at specific locations.Special logic at specific locations (power plant, enemy HQ entrance).Disabling some features (economies, merc contract renewal, SAM sites) - basically a "Single mission" mode.Likely possible to be integrated to JA2:S, with feature flags as needed.Example: Light up soldiers (not the surrounding) when fake lights are disabled (hotkey G). ![]()

To install plugins for VI or VIM users simply type: vi ~/.zshrcįor people that are not familiar with the vim commands or just prefer a text editor, type: open ~/.zshrc This is where plugins come in handy.ĭepending on your setup and what languages you code in, your plugins might vary, so here is the official oh-my-zsh plugin wiki with a list of all the default plugins available. With "Oh-my-ZSH" we already get out of the box tons of different features that will enhance your workflow like auto-completion and others. Having a pretty looking terminal is nice and all, but maybe we want to add some more functionality in there too! This is where plugins and shortcuts come in. You now have a sleek looking terminal! Functionality With the "Powerlevel10k" theme you will now be prompted with a quick setup tutorial that runs you through the different options for the theme, but then you are set! Save the file and restart iTerm and you are done! Simply change this last line to your theme name: ZSH_THEME="powerlevel10k/powerlevel10k" # to know which specific one was loaded, run: echo $RANDOM_THEME # load a random theme each time oh-my-zsh is loaded, in which case, In our ~/.zshrc, you will find a paragraph that looks like this (usually third paragraph from the top): # Set name of the theme to load - if set to "random", it will Next up is changing the theme setting in our ~/.zshrcįor VI or VIM users simply type: vi ~/.zshrcįor people that are not familiar with the vim commands or just prefer a simple text editor, type: open ~/.zshrc git clone -depth=1 $/themes/powerlevel10kĢ. In this example, we use the git clone command for this. We will have to download the theme into the oh-my-zsh custom theme directory. In this example, we will go through how to download the "Powerlevel10k" theme, but this is similar for all other themes too. Here an image of the different theme styles you can configure with it. One last step for me, is to change the background color here, to get the "darker" mode:īeyond figuring out your color scheme, you might want to add an oh-my-zsh theme that changes up the way your commands or current directory line might look and even can give additional functionality like timestamps and more. It will show up in the list just like this: Now, don't forget to also select the preset once you have imported it. Press the Color Presets select and choose "Import", to import your previously downloaded color preset from the Downloads folder. Right there at the bottom right, you can find the color preset option. For this, you open iTerm 2 and press "CMD +, " which will open up your iTerms preferences. This will direct you into your Downloads folder and download the color preset to that directory for you.įollowing this, we need to tell iTerm to use the preset we just download. To download the color theme, simply copy the code below into your terminal: cd Downloads & curl -O However, I manually set a darker background color, to match my dark mode UI better. My current personal favorite is the iTerm Material Design based on Google's popular Material UI colors. And of course, feel free to go with a different one than the one I go with below! Here is a list of lots of different themes to download: ITerm already provides different color schemes out of the box, but there are also many on the internet, free for you to download. Now, that we have the basic installation out of the way, let's make sure everything looks nice before we get to set up more functionality. The oh-my-zsh install will replace your default terminal with zsh automatically when installed. Once this is done, we will open up our new iTerm application to install zsh and oh-my-zsh.īrew install zsh & sh -c "$(curl -fsSL )".Then let's use Homebrew to download and install iTerm 2: brew cask install iterm2 We will be using it to download iTerm, but you can use it to download lots of other packages as well.įirst, if you don't have already, let's download and install Homebrew. Think of HomeBrew as a package manager to install and manage software on macOS. You can simply download iTerm from its website, but since you are I assume a terminal user, I highly recommend you to use Homebrew. ![]() To get started, we have to install a few things first. ![]() Strangers will come up to you in cafés and ask you, "that is amazing! are you some sort of genius?"Īre you sold yet? I am for sure. Once installed, your terminal shell will become the talk of the town or your money back! With each keystroke in your command prompt, you'll take advantage of the hundreds of powerful plugins and beautiful themes. Oh My Zsh will not make you a 10x developer.but you may feel like one. ![]() The bad news is that we should turn back once again and take a look at the way we work, forgetting for a moment about the technology we use to help ourselves. An agile process basically starts with a whiteboard and a pack of post-its, so any software tool can come and help only once the team establishes the workflow, knows it well and has it tested. They all can be viewed on a single screen, if we take some time to configure a compelling Jira dashboard. Trash KPIs and useless reports based on them are the problem, not the tools supporting such reports. Again, there are 200 additional reporting apps for Jira available on the Atlassian Marketpla ce which cover everything from advanced time tracking through Gantt charts to solutions allowing to create custom reports of any kind. The situation with reporting is kind of similar: if we accept the fact that products on the market come from their target audiences’ needs, we should take a closer look at the way we measure teams’ effectiveness first, and check if it encourages toxic behavior. Instead, people in charge of managing the project decide to keep the requirements top secret and let the devs blame the tool instead of the process. The devs need it to understand the global assumptions behind the project, start tinkering at the atom level, and integrate tiny bits of code into a working system. Let’s go through seven most common reasons why people say they hate using Jira, try to understand where this frustration comes from, and think of possible ways to turn it around into an everlasting love relationship.Īnother problem is having the right management software in place, but lack of transparency in terms of sharing the information with the development teams. But the more people get hands-on with the tool, the more diverse opinions appear on the web about both its general usability and specific features. Over 50,000 businesses around the globe use Atlassian Jira for this purpose and require at least its basic knowledge from their new hires. Because of that, this software has eventually become an unquestionable IT industry standard, and is now actively expanding to non-technical teams as well as personal use. As we tend to work in dislocated teams or a culture that encourages to use technology for communication, we spend a good chunk of our time in some kind of a project tracking tool. We spend at least one third of our lives at work, which inevitably makes us feel strong emotions. Love and hate are often two sides of the same coin, especially when it comes to someone or something we interact with every day. “When your views are down, it affects your financial stability and puts your career at risk,” said Luis Capecchi, a 23-year-old TikTok creator in Los Angeles. “It feels like I’m trying to capture this prize, but I don’t know what the prize even is.” “It almost feels like I’m getting a taste of celebrity, but it’s never consistent and as soon as you get it, it’s gone and you’re constantly trying to get it back,” said Lauren Stasyna, 22, a TikTok creator in Toronto. But as quickly as creators rise, they can fall. Thanks to the app’s algorithmically generated “For You” page, TikTok delivers fame faster than any other platform it’s possible to amass millions of followers within a matter of weeks. “TikTok is just as demanding as YouTube,” said Gohar Khan, 22, a TikTok creator in Seymour, Conn. “It feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day.” “It’s exhausting,” said Jose Damas, 22, a TikTok creator in Los Angeles. They’d grown up watching YouTubers speak frankly about these issues. When a fresh crop of young stars began building audiences on TikTok in late 2019 and early 2020, many were hopeful that this time would be different. ![]() “If you slow down, you might disappear,” the YouTuber Olga Kay told Fast Company in 2014. YouTube product managers and executives addressed creators’ concerns and promised a solution.īut problems with burnout in the creator community are endemic. Their critiques centered on YouTube’s algorithm, which favored longer videos and those who posted on a near-daily basis, a pace that creators said was almost impossible to meet. That same year, many large YouTube creators began stepping away from the platform, citing mental health issues. “Eventually there will be too many influencers, the market will be too saturated,” Mr. In 2018, Josh Ostrovsky, an Instagram creator known as The Fat Jew, who had also spoken about burnout, echoed those sentiments. “No one seems to be having any fun anymore on Instagram,” a contributor to the blog This Is Glamorous wrote at the time. In 2017, Instagram influencers began leaving the platform, saying they were feeling depressed and discouraged. The North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83) and the World Geodetic System of 1984 (WGS84) are examples of these new datums. Using the GRS80 spheroid, new datums were developed both regionally and worldwide. This spheroid and its associated datums define the earth's shape by measuring and triangulating from an outside perspective and use the mass center of the earth as an absolute origin. Instead of defining the earth from surface measurements linked horizontally and related vertically to mean sea level, this new mathematical approximation was derived from a point located out in space. In 1980, a new spheroid, the Geodetic Reference System (GRS80), was developed from satellite measurements. As GPS, a satellite-based location system, matured and became accessible to the public, the need to extend and better define the earth's spheroid and associated datums became more pressing. More than 30 years ago, satellites began acquiring remote imagery. The calculations were done manually, in sections, over many years, and errors vary from station to station. Many NAD27 control points were calculated from observations taken in the 1800s. The spheroid NAD27 uses Clarke 1866 that originates at a surface point at Meades Ranch, Kansas. ![]() The North American Datum of 1927 (NAD27) is a classic example of an early, local earth-surface-based datum. The resulting datums were typically limited in extent and were tied to an origin point on the earth's surface. For those outside the field of cartography, map projections were often an issue, but datums, those absolute global frames of reference, were not.Īs mapping expanded globally, cartographers established coordinate reference frameworks that helped standardize mapping activities across wide areas. Typically, local coordinate systems were developed and vertical and horizontal control were derived from a local frame of reference or datum. Field surveying was performed on a local basis using traditional mechanical, optical, and laser equipment. Until recently, a comprehensive knowledge of-or even much interest in-datums was limited to mathematicians, geodesists, and geographers specializing in cartography. As surveying technology improved and data acquisition increased worldwide, the mathematical formulas and the related parameters used to describe the shape of our irregular earth continually improved and were expressed in spheroids such as Everest 1830, Airy 1849, Clarke 1866, Clarke 1880, and Krasovsky 1940. A datum defines the position of the spheroid relative to the center of the earth. Geographic coordinate systems use a spheroid to calculate positions on the earth. Prior to satellite mapping technology, the best approximation of the shape of the earth was the mathematically calculated geoid, which evolved into slightly flattened spheroids or ellipsoids. These are all very real examples caused, in large part, by using data sets lacking a common datum. GPS coordinates acquired by hikers show their position half way up a very steep cliff instead of on the mapped trail below. Fire hydrant points collected with GPS appear located in parking lots or inside buildings instead of out by the curb.
